Herschel Greer Stadium

Opened: April 26, 1978

Final Game: August 27, 2014

Capacity: 15,000

Affiliated at the time with the Milwaukee Brewers

This is the eastern-most bastion of the Pacific Coast League. This was exciting since I was going to get to see two teams that I had never seen before. This was also the last year of Herschel Greer Stadium. The new park was being built downtown and from what I’ve read is quite nice. I’ll make it back there one day. I visited here when I went to Cincinnati in 2014 for a Saturday night game.

How did I get there?

I had visited Stone’s River National Battlefield and the Carter House in Franklin before coming here. The remains of a Civil War fort are right next door. The stadium is located right off of I-65 and has a large parking lot that seemed to double as an business lot during the day. Parking was $5.

Ticket prices

Price were cheap. I got a general admission seat for $8.

Finding my seat and amenities

With general admission I could sit anywhere in the section. First the good, the food, like at many southern ballparks was great. There was a little issue when I asked for an ice cream helmet sundae, since apparently sundae has a different meaning in the south but my accent gave it away that I was from the North. Now for the bad. When i got to my seat I found that the plywood floor was rotting away and there was a lot of give. The benches were also very uncomfortable.

In game experience

The first thing that you notice in the park is its unique scoreboard. That was cool. Outside of that they had the usual stable of in-game entertainment.

Getting out

As it was easy to get to from the interstate it was also easy to get out of. There was a good crowd but I left early. I was tired and had about 100 more miles to drive to up near Bowling Green so I could visit Mammoth Cave the next day.

Wrap

I could be much more harsh but this was the last year of the stadium so obviously the powers that be knew there was a problem and had already begun building a new park. You would figure that with a new park in Memphis that this would have happened sooner but there’s nothing that I can do about it. It is also kind of weird that this park is closer to Louisville but they never play each other.
