2019 so far is progressing well. One of the last major things I need to do is to put my books on a bookcase but I have been using the bookcases to hold the beer bottle collection. Priorities right? So when I had some downtime I couldn’t find any of the books I have yet to read (they’re in a big stack and I’m too lazy to sort them) so I got out my old Calvin and Hobbes books. Gotta love Calvin. And Hobbes. And Stupendous Man. And Spaceman Spiff. And Susie Derkins. And Tracer Bullet. And Ms. Wormwood. And Roslyn. Building some character one panel at a time.
Started the week making my weekly stop at Gift Horse before heading over to York High to watch the beat down that comes with Spring Grove. Both the varsity and JV games were mercy rules. With York playing 4 games this week, after playing 4 last week and 4 next week, this could have been worse but the bench played liberally. York won 72-29. It’s going to be awhile before Spring Grove sniffs a winning season again.
Tuesday was my day to see the freshman and junior high teams. They played Northeastern. I arrived a bit late finding York up 21-0 in the junior high game when I walked in. The mercy rule started in this one at the end of the third quarter and well, it was ugly. The freshman game was a bit closer but it was still lopsided. OK, it wasn’t a mercy rule so it was closer. The Bobcats might have some down years coming up.
Wednesday took me to Dallastown for the York High game. Dallastown gave up the first time they played York and they gave up in their last game against Northeastern. What would they do this time? You would hope that they wouldn’t do it again and they didn’t. After a big first quarter York stunk. They couldn’t hit a shot, they couldn’t defend the rim and they couldn’t pass. Despite that they were in the game and could very well have pulled it off but were out of control at times. Dallastown wanted it more and they won 62-56. Have to wonder if York is a little tired?
Friday brought me up to one of the games I always dread at Central. York has not generally played well there and while this is not the best team Central has put on the court York has not been playing well lately. Central though does not have the athletes that Dallastown has and is still missing a starter due to a football injury, though at this point that may not matter as much. For two and a half quarters this one looked like a repeat of Wednesday but then something happened. Turnovers started to be forced on defense, rebounds were secured, free throws were made and York’s two big scorers started taking over. A 10 point halftime deficit was cut to 2 at the end of the 3rd and they took the lead for good early in the 4th. Central continued to fight and kept it close but York won the game at the line 61-56.
Saturday’s Geigle Classic in Reading was canceled on account of the incoming snow storm. The freshman team was supposed to play Wilson at 10 AM though, before the storm was supposed to hit. I moseyed on down to Hannah Penn but saw no bus outside so I decided to go for a walk. You know, get a little exercise in. My dad called a few minutes later saying the game was at York High. By the time I could turn around and get back to my place it would have been too late so I didn’t go. Spent my afternoon hanging pictures and other such mundane tasks as the storm turned into just a heavy rain.
That meant that there was no shoveling to do on a cold Sunday morning. Just sitting around. OK I did walk down to Collusion to have a beer. Did my laundry and other mundane tasks too. Life isn’t always exciting.
