The World Needs More Kevin

This Week in Kevin

This week was supposed to open up with York High playing Milton Hershey on Monday but someone got cold feet with the weather forecast and the game was postponed. It was just rain folks. Either way I made my weekly stop at Gift Horse and then I headed home for an enjoyable evening with my 2 furry companions. Tuesday took York High to Central in a game I decided to skip. York has not fared well at Central and it usually ends up being frustrating to watch. I think I’ve seen them defeat Central there only a handful of times since the new gym opened, if that. I can think of at least 2 and there’s probably another one or two others in there as well. Central did lose to Northeastern the other night so they are hardly invincible. I stayed home eating my leftover lo mien from Sunday and playing Idle Miner Tycoon since the Event Mine came up. Was trying to beat my personal best time of 1 day 28 minutes (didn’t, took one hour more). Central won by 8 in an ugly affair and I was glad I stayed home.

Wednesday saw Cabrini College come to town to take on York and I did head over for that one. Not much to report on this one, York got up early and built and big lead and kept on building. The starters didn’t even play 20 minutes in this as the lead was so big (48 at one point) but the bench and 3rd stringers kept scoring too. The only questions at the end was would they hit triple digits and would the last man on the bench Chris Tracy score. The answer to the first was yes and the second was no, though he did get 3 shots off. He’ll score a point at some point in his career. York wins this 107-67.

On Friday Red Lion came to York High. Not quite sure what to expect from this. Red Lion probably has the best big man in the league but don’t seem to have much else. They lost a lot of scoring to graduation too but they always seem to play well at York High. York has improved a bit. Still not a lot of offense but they finally are starting to hit some 3’s and the free throw shooting has gotten better. The Lions star Devonte Dennis was held in check scoring only 8 points, partly by him getting into foul trouble and Red Lion really isn’t the same team when he is on the bench. Watching the theatrics when Lions coach Steve Schmel disagrees with a call is worth the price of admission itself. I would almost like to take in the Red Lion/Dallastown game because both of those coaches are big whiners. York’s offense still isn’t great but they also got some bench production thanks to a big night from Kelvin Matthews with 14. York wins this 49-42.

Wrapped Christmas presents on Saturday. And not much else. On Sunday I headed up to Hershey for the Bears game with the Springfield Thunderbirds. Stopped at Troegs beforehand for some beer to go. This game got off to a slow start, have to wonder if the teams are ready for the holiday break. After a scoreless first period Springfield found the back of the net twice in the second period. Things looked grim for the Bears but something finally clicked in the third period. Matt Moulson netted a goal despite being doubleteamed at the blue line to put the Bears on the board and he added another a few minutes later. A few minutes after that Philippe Maillet got a pass at center court on a break away and beat Thunderbird goalie Philippe Desrosiers in the hockey equivalent of the slam dunk. Hershey’s defense held firm the rest of the way and the Bears win 3-2. Postgame stop at Boneshire since this was a 1:00 start. I could actually get used to that, it was nice getting home with some daylight still in the sky.
