Well the stay-at-home order was originally supposed to end on Friday but of course it was extended. So, there will be at least one more week after this stuck at home and probably longer since York County is in the middle when it comes to COVID-19 cases. As much as I love my furry little buddies I want to get out of the house and see some sites but then non-essential travel would not be allowed yet so I still wouldn’t be getting out. While the company I work for is considered to be an essential service (just found that out last week) the state wants you to telework if possible. Well my Internet has been on the fritz so it’s not really possible so I’m back in at work at least a few days this week. Hooray!
I did get out of the house to get another grass cutting in on Tuesday. A rainy week after a rain weekend so I only had a limited window to get it done. Gotta love some fresh air but it sure took a lot out of me. I don’t know if its allergies or just sitting around more often but I was huffing and puffing and sore when it was all over. The soreness I get this time of year as my body gets used to 3+ hours of cutting grass but this was different. The good news was that I got my best night’s sleep in weeks. Spent Wednesday morning shoveling top soil for a new set of flower beds at the neighborhood association. My shoulders were a bit sore but I was it was nowhere near as bad as the day before.
As for the baseball season I would have had bobbleheads in Lehigh Valley and Harrisburg with visits to Frederick, Baltimore and maybe DC as scattered around Altoona’s visit to Harrisburg. I had even been eyeing a short trip down to Richmond to see Altoona next week while also taking in the new park in Fredericksburg and maybe even a visit to Salem. Obviously that’s not happening either. I am seeing that baseball could start by the end of June so that is a good thing but then it still might not be played in front of fans which does not help me. I’ve got alternate plans just in case.
Finished Second Winchester. Lots of mentions of my ancestor’s regiment the 87th Pennsylvania and it seems like they performed about as well as combat rookies could do. As always it was the leadership (Robert Milroy) that got them into trouble as he should have evacuated Winchester long before this began but he thought he could hold the forts. In a way he did as the Confederates were unable to take the inner forts but he had to evacuate since his men were low on ammunition and the evacuation did not go well. I should note that my ancestor was not present at the battle as he had received his medical discharge 2 months before. Saw a few common York County names mentioned. I had always thought that the entire regiment was captured at Stephenson’s Depot but it turns out at least 400 soldiers got away. A silver lining in what was a total embarrassment for the Union. Next up is James McPherson’s War on the Waters about the Navy during the Civil War.
My brother moved on Saturday. Took 3 hours+ but I wasn’t quite as sore as I thought I would be. There will be a bit more next week and I am scoring a free bench press out of it. I’ll have to clear some room in my basement which won’t be hard. I’ve just been lazy about it for the past year and few months.
Hit the grocery store on Sunday morning. On the way out the talking heads on our local sports talk station was discussing the Nicaraguan Basketball League. It was both the men’s and women’s playoffs. I didn’t even realize that Nicaragua had a pro league. You learn something new everyday. Maybe ESPN can televise it. It’s gotta be better than watermelon seed spitting, stone skipping and lawn mower racing.
