Breweries Visited

I enjoy drinking beer and since I also enjoy getting out to see the country it allows me to visit local breweries. This is the complete list of breweries that I have visited with pictures of some of them.

Alabama

Avondale, Birmingham
Cahaba, Birmingham
Good People, Birmingham

Kevin’s Pick – Good People. It was right across the street from the baseball stadium and there was nothing better than a cold beer on a hot Alabama August day.

Delaware

16 Mile, Georgetown (closed)
Bellefonte, Wilmington
Big Oyster, Lewws
Blue Earl, Smyrna
Crooked Hammock, Lewes
Dogfishhead, Milton
Iron Hill, Wilmington
Mispillion River, Milford
Third Wave, Delmar

Kevin’s Pick – While Dogfishhead is a great place I personally liked 16 Mile, especially since Dogfishhead got rid of free samples. The beer is distributed only in Delaware and it only about 8 miles from Dogfishhead so you could hit both. It had none of the hustle and bustle though but it was closed. Of course the neat thing with Delaware is that there is no sales tax. I like that.

Illinois

Motor Row, Chicago
Rock Bottom, Chicago
Vice District, Chicago

Kevin’s Pick – flip a coin with this. Of the two I preferred Motor Row. Cheaper and less crowded but with a good product. Rock Bottom is a chain brewery but happened to be right around the corner from the hotel I stayed in.

Indiana

South Bend Brew Works, South Bend

Kentucky

Against the Grain, Louisville

Maryland

Alecraft, Bel Air
Antietam, Hagerstown (both at the old location at Benny’s and the new location)
Backshore Bay, Ocean City
BC, Hunt Valley
Brewer’s Alley, Frederick
Brewer’s Art, Baltimore
Burley Oak, Berlin
Calvert, Upper Marlboro
Chesapeake, Annapolis
Cushwa, Williamsport
Denizen’s, Silver Spring
DuClaw, Bowie (since closed)
Eastern Shore, St. Michaels
Evolution, Salisbury
Flying Dog, Frederick
Guinness Open Gate, Halethorpe
Heavy Seas, Baltimore
Independent, Bel Air
Jailbreak, Laurel
Key, Dundalk
Midnight Run, Frederick
Monocacy, Frederick
Mully’s, Price Frederick
Nepenthe, Baltimore
Ocean City, Bel Air and Ocean City locations (closed)
Olde Mother, Frederick (old Patrick St. location and new Market St. location)
Oliver, Baltimore
Peabody Heights, Baltimore
RAR, Cambridge
Rockwell, Frederick
Rubber Soul, Salisbury
Ruddy Duck, Dowell
Slate Farm, Whiteford
Tall Tales, Parsonburg
Union, Baltimore (old Union Ave. location and 41st Street location)
Waverly, Baltimore

Kevin’s pick – I hit some of the Baltimore breweries and was impressed. Union, Waverly, Oliver and Key were all good. When out of Baltimore Eastern Shore, Evolution, Tall Tales and Burley Oak are good stops. None of these breweries in the list are bad, I can’t complain about any of them. Flying Dog may be the most famous Maryland brewery and it’s a nice stop but can get crowded.

Michigan

Detroit, Detroit
Motor City, Detroit

Kevin’s Pick – Since I collect bottles Motor City gets the pick. Good pizza too before I took in the Tigers game.

New Jersey

Death of the Fox, Clarksboro
Eight and Sand, Woodbury
Flying Fish, Somerdale
Icarus, Lakewood
River Horse, Ewing Township
Spellbound, Mt. Holly
Village Idiot, Mt. Holly

Kevin’s pick – River Horse. Granted I had more time there since I was rushed when I visited Icarus (it was on Maikel Franco bobblehead giveaway at Lakewood) but I was also familiar with them already. York is at the western limit of where they distribute. You could get samples but you had to pay to take a tour (state law).

New York

The 1940s, Holbrook
Binghamton, Johnson City
Blue Point, Patchogue
Coney Island, Brooklyn
Flagship, Staten Island
Galaxy, Binghamton
Kills Boro, Staten Island
The North, Endicott
St. James, Holbrook
Strong Rope, Brooklyn
Staten Island, Staten Island
Water Street, Binghamton

Kevin’s pick – Dual pick here. Water Street and Galaxy are right around the corner from each other. For a cheaper meal stop in at Water Street but for a wider variety of beer hit Galaxy. In the New York City area I enjoyed Strong Rope, St. James, Blue Point and Kills Boro.

North Carolina

Asheville, Asheville
Bhramari, Asheville
Birdsong, Charlotte
Brewery 99, New Bern
Bright Light, Fayetteville
Bull City, Durham
Bull Durham, Durham
Burial, Asheville
Catawba, Asheville
Clouds, Durham
Durty Bull, Durham
Eurisko, Asheville
Fiddlin’ Fish, Winston-Salem
Flytrap, Wilmington
Foothills, Winston-Salem
Free Range, Charlotte
Front Street, Wilmington
Full Steam, Durham
Heist, Charlotte
Incendiary, Winston-Salem
Ironclad, Wilmington
Joymongers, Greensboro
Lake Gaston, Fayetteville
Little Brother, Greensboro
Mother Earth, Kinston
Natty Greene’s, Greensboro
New Belgium, Asheville
Olde Mecklenburg, Charlotte
Ponysaurus, Durham
Preyer, Greensboro
Raleigh, Raleigh
Red Oak, Whitsett
Triple C, Charlotte
Twin Leaf, Asheville
Wedge, Asheville
Wicked Weed, Asheville
Wilmington, Wilmington
Wise Man, Winston-Salem

Kevin’s pick – Birdsong. Good beer and a laid back place. A lot of the breweries in Charlotte are near each other so it is easy to visit them. I liked Birdsong’s product the best. Durty Bull, Olde Mechlenburg and Triple C were also nice places. Charlotte is nice since many of the breweries are within an easy drive of each other. Of course that is drive, and since I do not want to pick up a DUI, it meant getting beer to go.

Ohio

Fat Heads, Cleveland
Great Lakes, Cleveland
Market Garden, Cleveland
Nano Brew, Cleveland
Platform, Cleveland

Kevin’s pick – I discovered Great Lakes beer when I was in Chicago in 2009 and have enjoyed it since. It’s a nice place to eat, especially before an Indians game since they offer shuttle to the game. Several other breweries are also within walking distance and they are nothing to sneeze at either. In fact there are 5 within an easy walking distance of each other there, which is all of these except for Fat Heads. Of course you are saying that there are only 4 left. Well, one was closed the day I stopped for an Indians game.

Victory, Parkesburg
Wacker, Lancaster
The Washington Brewing Company, Washington
Warehouse, Hanover
Weyerbacher, Easton
Wyndridge Farms, Dallastown
Yard’s, Philadelphia
Yuengling, Pottsville
Zeroday, Harrisburg

Kevin’s Pick – I’m going to cheat but since I live in PA and spend most of my time here I have to pick more than one. When in Pittsburgh hit Pennsylvania or the Church Brew Works. Penn is PA’s first craft brewery and you get to eat inside a church at Church. When in Allentown I hit Fegley’s. It’s right across the street from the arena. Yards has the best beers in Philly that I have visited. In Central PA Collusion is 3 blocks from where I live and Liquid Hero and Mudhook aren’t much further. I also like Zeroday, Pizza Boy Appalachian, Boneshire and Lancaster (for the beer, I’m not a fan of eating there). Pizza Boy might be the favorite

South Carolina

Brewery 85, Greenville
Liberty, Myrtle Beach
New South, Myrtle Beach
Palmetto, Charleston
River Rat, Columbia
Southend, Charleston (since closed)
Swamp Rabbit, Traveler’s Rest
Thomas Creek, Greenville
Twisted Spur, Columbia

Kevin’s pick – Swamp Rabbit. It’s in a picturesque town and the beer is good. If only they served food. Palmetto and Thomas Creek also had some good offerings as well.

Tennessee

Alliance, Knoxville
Chatt Brew, Chattanooga
Crafty Bastard, Knoxville
Hutton and Smith, Chattanooga
Last Days of Autumn, Knoxville
Saw Works, Knoxville
Schulz Brau, Knoxville
Smoky Mountain, Farragut
Woodruff, Knoxville
Yee Haw, Johnson City

Kevin’s pick – Saw Works. Their building is labeled as the Saw Works World HQ, which is funny and their product is good. I bought two packs of cans and was not disappointed in either. Crafty Bastard was good as well but I prefer places that offer something to go. Don’t need to get a DUI after all.

Virginia

Ardent, Richmond
Bad Wolf, Manassas
Beltway, Sterling
Bike TrAle, Leesburg
Black Hoof, Leesburg
Black Walnut, Leesburg
Blue Mountain, Avon
Brew Republic, Woodbridge

Studio Brew, Bristol
Three Notch’d, Richmond
Trapanzee, Sterling
Triple Crossing, Richmond
Vasen, Richmond
Veil, Richmond
Wasserhund, Virginia Beach
Water’s End, Woodbridge
Young Veterans, Virginia Beach

Kevin’s Pick – A fourway tie here. Triple Crossing in Richmond was probably my favorite of 2017 and Hardywood Park in Richmond was my favorite of 2018. I’ve also hit Heritage a couple of times after touring the Manassas Battlefield so it offers a good beer for a hot summer day. Water’s End also offers a good product and when I head down for Potomac Nationals games I leave early to avoid as much traffic as I can and need to kill time. It offers the perfect spot to do so.

Washington DC

3 Stars
Atlas Brew Works (West Virginia Ave. location)
Bardo
Bluejacket
Capitol City
DC Brau
Gordon Biersch
Hellbender
Right Proper (Brookland location)

Kevin’s Pick: Capitol City and Gordon Biersch (a chain brewpup) have sit down meals but I liked Hellbender’s beer the best. 3 Stars was a pain in the butt to find, Hellbender might be as well but once you find one of them it’s easy to find the other.

West Virginia

Berkeley Springs, Berkeley Springs
Morgantown, Morgantown
Mountain State, Morgantown

Kevin’s Pick: Berkeley Springs. A bit hard to find but good food and good beer. I might be a bit biased since my aunt won a gift certificate for there and gave it to me but I enjoyed the free growler fill and the beer that was in it.

Ontario

Steam Whistle, Toronto

To date the only foreign brewery I have stepped foot in. It was a quick experience. There was a wedding party that was starting in 15 minutes so I just got a 6 pack and some pint glasses to go. I’ll be back, it’s not like it’s that hard to get into Canada.
