When the Pirates left State College for Jamestown I wondered why. About one year later I found out. They wanted to put their farm team in Morgantown and since Jamestown did not draw well it was a logical choice for relocation. Like in State College the ballpark would be shared with the local university. My dad’s friend who goes with me to a lot of games is a WVU grad so he was eager to see the park. We’ve been out once every year that the park has been open.
US 30 to Gettysburg, US 15 to Thurmond, MD 77 over the Catoctins, MD 64 around Cavetown, MD 66 to I-70, I-70 to I-68 to I-79. It takes about 3 hours to drive. Parking is $4. The park is situated in a new shopping center and in 2017 a new exit opened on I-79 for the park which makes getting in and out much easier.
$10 gets you in but since my companion is a WVU grad he wants to splurge. It’s hard to do that here as the seating capacity is small.
It’s not hard to find the seats. They offer the usual standard stadium-fare with a few local stands as well. The field itself is all field turf except for the mound. That means they only need a grounds crew of 1. Hope that person doesn’t get sick!
It’s the standard experience. When I was at the season finale of 2017 the crowd was not too into it. Cooper the Bear ran out on the field with the team logo flag and I don’t think anyone noticed. It’s not like the team was bad but the season was over. Another game I went to a snake was found in the next section over. Now that was entertaining!
With the new interchange being opened it is very easy. Before you had to drive through the entire shopping center and sit at a few lights. It does make one wonder why Morgantown needs a shopping center of that size but I guess the students need to shop somewhere.
I keep looking every year for a way to come out for a weekend and take in either a Pirates or Washington Wild Things game at the same time but so far I have not found the opportunity. Maybe one day. Until then I guess I am the crazy person driving 3 hours to watch New York Penn baseball and then driving back. It makes for a long day. There are two very nice breweries in town though.
