For me if this park were about 30 minutes closer I would be here a lot more. I am a Pirates fan so I like coming here but Turnpike tolls just keep going up. Mostly now I just come out for bobblehead games. I saw my first game here in 2001.
There are three ways I can get here. The quickest is out the Turnpike and up I-99. I have also taken US 322 and then US 22 as well as following 322 to I-99 at State College. I don’t like paying turnpike tolls but there really isn’t a better way. Parking is either $4 in the stadium lot or $3 parking garage.
About standard, I can get in for $11. It’s a lovely park and worth the money.
The stadium is divided into two decks and the row numbers simply keep on going. I think row 16 is the first row in the upper deck. That can be a bit confusing but as long as you head to your section you will be fine. I don’t normally eat stadium fare elsewhere but since I only make it here for bobbleheads, hence I am there early, I either grab something at the Sheetz up the street or get a Curve Burger which I can then put as many fixings on as I like.
Everytime Altoona scores a run Al Tuna comes out of the centerfield gate and does a dance. Other than that it is the same in-games entertainment you see elsewhere. I do remember the good ol’ days when Steamer would get on the roller coaster and ride it during the 9th inning until the Curve closed the game out. Steamer retired and the new mascot doesn’t do that anymore.
I usually go home via US 22 through Huntingdon and Lewistown to avoid the tolls. Getting out is easy and you can connect to 22 via the Frankstown Road easily enough. It’s a bit longer of a drive but much more scenic, not that you can really see anything at night anyway.
If this park were about 30 minutes closer to me I would be here a lot more. I get to see the Curve when they come to Reading, Bowie and Harrisburg but it is nice to see them at home once in a while.
