Headed out into Western Pennsylvania in the winter of 2003.

Bushy Run Battlefield

The first stop was the Bushy Run Battlefield. In 1763 Fort Pitt was under siege and a relief column under Henry Bouquet was sent from Carlisle. As it was marching west on the Forbes Road it was ambushed near Bushy Run. The British force held and routed the Natives killing two prominent chiefs but took heavy losses themselves.

Kinzua

A cool stop was the Kinzua Dam and Viaduct. The Viaduct had blown over in a storm and is just laying on the ground.

Then to Erie

Into Ohio to visit Cuyahoga National Park

Fort Necessity

A world war started when a young George Washington was sent west to try to kick the French out of the Ohio Country. His ambush of the French at the nearby Jumonville Glen began the Seven Years War, or French and Indian War. Washington constructed Fort Necessity in a large meadow but with hills and forest on all sides and eventually the French and their Native allies forced him to surrender, the only time Washington ever surrendered.
