This is the only family vacation we have taken other than going to the beach. I had just got my driver’s license and my dad and I drove out to Colorado where he was competing in the Open Canoe Nationals in Golden, Colorado. Stopped in St. Louis to take in a baseball game. After the race finished we were on our way down to the Four Corners when the car died. Wound up staying in the Denver area until we flew home.
It’s a long drive out I-70 to Denver. Stopped in St. Louis and went up in the Gateway Arch and took in a Cardinals game. Continued to Kansas City and onto Topeka before beginning the long and boring drive to Denver. I drove for a bit of this as I had just got my driver’s license. You don’t really realize it but you are constantly going up in elevation but the only way that you know that is from the signs along the highway that say you’ve passed 2,000 feet and then 3,000 feet and so on.
My brother and mom were flying out to Denver so dad had to go pick them up. He dropped me off in Denver and I just walked around. Went up to the top of the state capitol building before making my way over to Coors Field. We saw two games here against the Dodgers. We stayed in Golden and visited Buffalo Bill’s grave on the mountain overlooking the town. Of course the most famous attraction in Golden in the Coors Brewery but I was 16 and couldn’t go in.
Took a trip down to Pike’s Peak.
We left Denver and were on our way down to the Four Corners but before leaving the Denver area my dad’s car died. The radiator melted. So we wound up staying in the Denver area and my dad rented a car after getting stir crazy inside the motel room and went into the Rockies. Since the car was going to be too expensive to fix we packed everything up and shipped it home and flew home.
