OK, first off a correction from a previous post, there apparently is a brewery in Spring Grove. Buon Appetito Restorante just outside of town has a brewery license and brews 5 or 6 beers. Guess there will be a stop there in the near future. I guess that was the place that I drove past that had brewery listed on their board two weeks ago. I couldn’t read the sign though since I was driving, just saw brewery. Big thanks to breweriesinpa.com for that. Guess that means Manchester is the largest town in York County without a brewery, which it would have been anyway since it is larger than Spring Grove. Just when you think you’ve got all of the breweries in your home county visited…
Monday started out like normal but turned into anything but. I was going to York High for their first round game in Districts against York Suburban but in the late afternoon my dad had to visit the ER. Didn’t get out of there until almost 7 so I missed the game. That’s also all I’m saying about this, the world does not need to know.
Wonder if Suburban has ever played at York High? If they have it was a long time ago. The only time I remember them matching up previously was in the league playoffs and those were on neutral sites. I am not expecting much in the playoffs and considering I didn’t even think they would have a winning record they are playing with house money at this point. York won 81-65 and also qualified for the state tournament with the win.
So on Tuesday I had to take my niece to school. It took 40 minutes to get to the bus stop. A train was passing through town and to avoid it required going a bit out of my way (but not by that much). It seems like every major street in York has road work going on either losing a lane or with a flagger controlling traffic. It normally doesn’t take long to get out of town but this time it took me about 20 minutes to get to Route 30. Does York need to have every downtown street under construction at the same time?
Heading to work on Wednesday I got the War in the Pacific quarter. Don’t have that one yet and this give me another good opportunity to complain that I have yet to get a Gettysburg quarter in circulation. That quarter came out in 2013, how is that possible? Just a random thought from me.
Wednesday also brought St. Mary’s to York College for their regular season finale. It’ll be a week before I see them again since they got a bye in the first round of the CAC playoffs but the big question is whether York or Christopher Newport will win the coin-flip for the top seed (assuming they both win tonight). It’s down to a 6 team league so it’s not a big field and it’ll be even smaller next year after York leaves to join the MAC. Some familiar names in that conference and that is no surprise for me since Juniata was in the MAC when I was there. This was a game that was hard to watch. I don’t know if York had come off the emotional high that was the big comeback win at Mary Washington or they just flat out stunk in this one. They shot a putrid 18% from the land of 3 and some of them were ugly shots and airballs. Fortunately St. Mary’s shot worse, 14%. Against a better opponent this would have been an ugly loss but York ground it out, hit some inside shots and won it 68-62. They might face St. Mary’s again and I did notice that one of their starters, a 7 footer, was not playing. And of course after the game York lost the coin flip with Christopher Newport for the #1 seed once again. They’ve lost the flip three years in a row to the same team. How does that happen? It means probably only 1 home playoff game so I’ll go up for the 6A District title game on Saturday.
Didn’t make it to New Oxford for York High’s district game. Why? See above. The result was about the same as a few weeks ago.
On Friday I did get up to Central for their District quarterfinal matchup against Governor Mifflin. Mifflin started on a 7-1 and then Central went on a 25-2 run to pretty much seal the game. Mifflin made a slight comback late but never got really close enough to make Central sweat. If Central plays like they did in the first half they will be hard to beat. If they play like they did in the second half they are very beatable. Central wins this 56-46.
Headed over to Gettysburg on Saturday to watch Gettysburg College take on Muhlenburg. Ironic since Gettysburg High took on Muhlenberg in Districts on Thursday. Muhlenberg won. Took a drive through the battlefield with lunch beforehand at Fourscore Brewing and a trip down to Frederick to visit Flying Dog since they just released some new beers and Monocacy on my way out of town. Got the Brunch Pack and I was one of the lucky ones, they only had 2 left after I bought mine. Got some new beers there, not quite I’m too excited about the Bloody Mary Ale since I hate Bloody Marys but we’ll see. First time out of state for the year, usually that comes before the end of February but that’s just the way it happened this year. Even though I was a stone’s throw away from the Mason-Dixon line a few weeks ago. Gettysburg started the year very well but has fallen on hard times since. This was an entertaining game, going back and forth. Muhlenberg was never able to put away the Bullets, who were playing their final game of the year and thus had no reason to hold back. It looked like Muhlenberg was going to pull away with about 10 minutes left but in the ebb and flow of the game they gave the lead right back. It came down to the final seconds. Muhlenberg missed a shot with the game tied at 72 and Gettysburg moved the ball down the court for their final shot but they turned the ball over at half court with about 4 seconds left. A Muhlenberg player went in for an open layup and was fouled with .2 seconds left. He was fouled, hit them both and that was that. Muhlenberg wins 74-72.
Stopped at Stony Run for a beer after the game.
