The World Needs More Kevin

This Week in Kevin

Monday brought the Milton Hershey school to York for the makeup of their December “snowout”. I didn’t go. Haka went to the vet on Tuesday and they gave me anti-anxiety medication, which has to be given 12 hours before the appointment, which would be at around halftime of the game. So I skipped this one. York blew a late lead and lost by 2. Considering Milton Hershey has been having a great season I was expecting far worse. Haka got an ear cleaning and that should take care of his ear mites and yeast infection. I just have to reapply something in one month. He was not a fan of the ear drops I was given and I was not in his good books by this point. Hopefully he’ll be back to normal in a few days as he realized that his ears are clear and after only a few hours he does seem to be better.

On Tuesday I made the executive decision to skip York High’s game at Red Lion and took in York College’s game against Wilson. Wasn’t expecting this to really be close since Wilson lost to Juniata earlier in the year and they do not start a player over 6’3 and only have one player on the roster taller than that. They are athletic, persistent and they can shoot. Wilson kept it close for about 10 minutes but York built a comfortable lead and put it away in the second half. The bench played liberally and everyone scored except for one player and for the first time in his career that player was not Chris Tracy. With about 40 seconds left he got the ball and hit a nice turnaround 4 foot jumper for his first career points. He’s a junior and has stuck with it and there was a loud cheer when he hit it. York wins it 81-49. York High beat Red Lion by 10 after being behind entering the 4th quarter. Doesn’t say much for Red Lion. Unfortunately York wasn’t helped by New Oxford taking down Central.

Friday brought Northeastern to York High. Pregame beer at Old Forge. York stormed out to an early lead hitting 3’s, something they have not done well at all with this year. They led this one wire to wire getting up by as much as 18 at one point. Of course you knew it was not going to last. Northeastern ratcheted up the pressure and York did some dumb things but in the end Northeastern just couldn’t get over the hump. They got it down to 4 or 5 but York held them off for a 58-51 win. The Bobcats were hurt by not having their best player available. The margin could have been better as York shot abysmally from the line and didn’t hit a free throw until the 4th quarter.

Saturday saw Mary Washington come to York College for a league game. Pregame stops at South County and Gunpowder Falls to stock up before heading over to the college. Gunpowder Falls is one of the few breweries in the county to bottle and they just changed their labels on some of their beers. Had I know as well that my dad was heading down to Kennard-Dale for their game this evening I might have just tagged along but what was done was done. Mary Washington has been one of those tough teams for York and while they are not having the best season they are still tough. This was a tale of two halves. UMW played extremely well in the first half using their size to get easy buckets, they got their own shots and hit the open 3 to take an 8 point halftime lead. York started slowly in the 2nd half allowing UMW to get a 14 point lead but then the comeback began. UWM is a different team when their talented 6’8 freshman Trey Barber was on the bench. He dominated the first half but struggled in the 2nd before being saddled with foul trouble. York’s 3’s started to fall and they started to be able to get some inside points erasing the entire lead. They retook the lead to stay with about 5 minutes left and held off UMW the rest of the way to take a big 79-73 win.

Didn’t go up to Parkland to watch York High take on the Executive Education Academy on Sunday. Fun at home since I am back in Haka’s good books and he’s back to being his lovable little self. I did not watch the Pro Bowl.
